Background of the study

Digital code switching, where speakers alternate between languages, is a common practice in Nigerian online communication. WhatsApp group chats, in particular, provide a fertile ground for such linguistic practices due to their informal and real time nature. Nigerian users frequently blend indigenous languages with English or Pidgin English, reflecting both cultural identity and social context (Obi, 2023). These interactions often involve spontaneous language alternation, enabling users to navigate diverse social settings and express nuanced meanings. Research indicates that code switching in digital spaces serves as a mechanism for negotiating social identity and managing conversation dynamics (Ibrahim, 2024). This study focuses on WhatsApp group chats to analyze the patterns, motivations, and outcomes of digital code switching. By exploring these practices, the research aims to shed light on how digital platforms influence multilingual communication and contribute to language evolution in Nigeria (Emeka, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Although code switching is prevalent in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats, there is a lack of detailed comparative research examining its linguistic structure and social implications. Many studies have focused on general online communication without addressing the specific context of WhatsApp, where real time, informal interactions shape language use differently. This gap hampers the development of effective linguistic models to explain digital bilingualism and leaves educators and policymakers without tailored strategies for addressing multilingual challenges in digital contexts (Chinwe, 2023). This study aims to fill this gap by providing an in depth analysis of code switching in WhatsApp group chats, highlighting its role in shaping contemporary Nigerian discourse (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the study

1. To document code switching patterns in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats.

2. To identify the sociolinguistic factors driving these practices.

3. To assess the implications of code switching for digital communication.

Research questions

1. What are the common code switching patterns in WhatsApp group chats?

2. What factors influence language alternation in these contexts?

3. How does code switching impact digital communication and identity?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it evaluates digital code switching in Nigerian WhatsApp group chats, offering insights into multilingual online communication. The findings will inform linguistic theory and provide practical guidance for educators and policymakers in managing digital bilingualism (Ibrahim, 2024; Obi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to WhatsApp group chats among Nigerian users, excluding other platforms and offline multilingual interactions.

Definitions of terms

• Code Switching: Alternating between two or more languages in a conversation.

• Digital Bilingualism: The use of multiple languages in digital communication.

• Group Chats: Multi participant conversational threads on messaging platforms.
